Nokia 5530 XpressMusic vs Samsung Star S5230/Tocco Lite

Samsung Star  is not a direct 5530 competitor, but I found that many cellphone buyers are confused between Nokia 5530 and Samsung Star . So, i decided to write a post to clarify their doubts.

You may wonder why am i not calling it a competitor when Star is also a touchscreen phone with similar looks and size and falls in the same price range.I’m saying this on the basis of smartphone capabilities.

While Nokia 5530 is a smartphone based on Symbian operating system, Samsung Tocco Lite is not a true smartphone i.e it cannot run 3rd party applications. This single reason is sufficient enough to consider buying 5530 over Samsung Star.A true smartphone has an operating system such as Windows Mobile, Mac, Linux, Symbian, Android etc.If you don’t know the potential of a Symbain smartphone then go through this post.
You will feel handicapped without provision for 3rd party applications. If you use Windows on your PC you may be aware how useful the 3rd party applications are.For Example  Photoshop, Firefox, Media Player Classic to name a few. Can you manage without these?
Although, this is the most important reason for choosing 5530 over Star, there are few more points that i would like to elaborate. Let’s go through them

Nokia 5530

Nokia 5530

Samsung Star Tocco Lite

Nokia 5530 vs Samsung Star -

Display - Nokia 5530 and Samsung Star have  same size touchscreens, but there is a huge difference between the screen resolutions. 5530 has much better 360×640 pixels, 16 Million Colors display, whereas Samsung Star has 240×400 pixels display with 256 K Colors.

Memory - Nokia 5530 comes with a 4 GB card in the sales package whereas you have to purchase a Micro SD card for Samsung Star separately.

Camera - Both have 3.2 Megapixel cameras but with huge difference. Nokia 5530 has an autofocus camera with LED Flash and can record DVD quality videos at 30 fps, whereas Star has a Fixed focus camera which lacks Flash and records poor quality  videos at 15 fps.
I got the video samples for both the cameras from gsmarena. You can check it out yourself.

Nokia 5530 Video Sample , Samsung Star Video Sample

Connectivity - While 553o offers high speed connectivity through Wifi, there is no means for high speed net browsing on Star. You have to rely on slow EDGE or GPRS connection.

Hardware - 5530 has very powerful hardware which includes 434 Mhz CPU and 128 MB RAM, same as Nokia flagship N97.This means faster operations and multitasking i.e running many applications simultaneously.

Kinetic Scrolling - Have you checked the 20 Min kinetic scrolling video of Nokia 5530? It is an awesome feature and works through the entire user interface.

Multimedia - 5530 offers excellent audio quality through noise isolating earphones in the sales package. It also includes standard 3.5 mm jack to plug in you own earphones. There is no such provision in Samsung Star. You can play full length DVD movies in .avi format on your 5530 through a 3rd party software.

Task Manager - You can switch between running applications and close them through task manager. No such task manager in Samsung Star.

I don’t want this to be a biased comparison with all praise for Nokia 5530. There are few cool things in Samsung Star also which i would like to describe.

TouchWiz - Samsung’s TouchWiz interface let’s you add widgets on you phone’s homescreen. The widget can be anything such as calendar, clock, document viewer etc.

Smart Unlock - By drawing a letter on you touchscreen you can unlock phone as well as launch applications. For example,  R to launch Radio.

Price - Samsung Star belongs to the entry level touchscreen phones and is priced  $ 215 at Amazon. Nokia 5530 is priced higher. It is available for $260 at Amazon.

So, are you willing to lose so many useful features in Nokia 5530 for mere $45 ?

  5. its a very biased statement. just a personal opinion expressed in a website. do you work for nokia? XD

  6. Hi, Amisu i don’t work for nokia at all. I have just put the facts in front of everyone. Why do you feel that my opinion is biased?I think you are disappointed with the comparison because you did the mistake of buying Star instead of 5530.

  7. 8. no im not a samsung star user. im an omnia II user. way better thank any nokia phone.

  9. So you use omnia but still you don’t know the potential of a smartphone.

  10. Any news on when it will be released into the Indian market and what about a 2000 rs price difference with 5230 ??

  11. The world’s largest maker of mobile phones is, again, Finland’s Nokia, which sold 100.8 million terminals in three months (over a million each day). The firm increases its market dominance, which is now 37% versus 33.4% a year ago. In fact, Nokia sells more mobile than three manufacturers that remain on the list all together.

The novelty is in second place in the table. For the first time, Motorola is displaced from this position, as is Korea’s Samsung, which sold 37.4 million phones, 13.7% of the market and 48.4% more units than a year ago.

The American Motorola, now relegated to the position of third largest manufacturer, is the only one of the big five fewer units sold (31.6% less) than a year ago. Its market share is now 13%.

    therefore prefer nokia

  12. yeah i agree its a biased review…phewww
by the way wat one can expect wen even the name of forum is 5530 Xpress Music. offcourse here 5530 wins no matter wat!!!!!!!!
hahahahaha at least write the real price tag man dont b soooooo biased…
yeah u cant compare two phones havin diffrent price tag…. in india the STAR “WIFI” is priced at $198(rs 9600) whereas 5530 expected price is $282 that means approx 13.5k to 14k.
so i think price diffrence say it all
anyways if price diffrence doesnt matter than try to compare 5530 with a 19k or 20k phone n than see the diffrence…..
    lol

  13. hahahaha
    go n check nokia site:

    http://www.nokia.co.in/find-products/products/nokia-5530-xpressmusic/specifications

5530 only has QCIF video recording(much infirior to qvga) with poor 176*220 resolution n that too only @ 15fps…hehehehe
whereas star has QVGA video recording with excellent 320*240 resolution.
    cheers ignorants!!!!!

  14. First of all i have compared both because there are lot of people who are confused between star and 5530.I have put the facts in front of everyone and there is no false statement in the above comparison.

Secondly, who told you that Star Wifi is available in India for Rs 9600.It launched in India for an official price of Rs 11000.

And Finally,Can’t you see that i have given the links for actual video samples taken by both the phones above.5530 records QVGA 640×480 resolution videos at 30 frames per second and star takes videos at 320×240 resolution and 15 frames per second.

    This review is so informative.

I agree with every opinion that the reviewer stated. He is not biased all that he said was for the welfare of those who are choosing b/w the 2 phones…

Nokia 5530 is indeed better read the review it says it all.

  20. Kimberly Landicho on October 4th, 2009 at 10:45 am

There is a version of samsung star that has wifi but still not impressive because youtube quality in the phone is poor according to CNET.

Go for Nokia 5530 according to user reviews it has a pristine LCD which is evident on video reviews…

  21. @abc………
can u plzz teell me abt the outlet from where your fren purchased the SAMSUNG STAR WIFI..
I want to purchase the same…
    thanks

  22. para mi esta mucho mejor el 5530, e maneja ambos y se queda atras el start, se puede manejar con facilidad el 5530 e instalar cosas sin tener q hacer trucos como el start.

    100% nokia 5530

    samsung star SUCK

    thanks
    and Congratulation, excelent blog

  23. Today I was supposed to buy Samsung Star Wifi; a store sells it here for PhP11,000 (inclusive of 8GB of MicroSD). I realized, however, that having a Symbian phone is better than a phone with a “proprietary OS” they won’t even reveal. S60 5th edition is quite new but a lot of software are coming out, so I decided to get the Nokia 5530 instead (PhP10,400)… You get a standard bud earphones which sounded great instead of Samsung’s “proprietary” earphone and a whole plethora of apps waiting to be installed in your phone.

I knew I made the right decision getting the 5530 over the Star.

Thank you for all the great info you’re putting up in this blog. I already bookmarked you on my 5530. Cheers!

  24. Hey… I agree that this is a biased review. However, as it is an ‘review’ it is an opinion. Some agree with the opinion, others don’t. That’s why it’s called an opinion. The widgets and the Smart Unlock appeal to me and I personally find the lay-out of Samsungs very easy to use. There are some good points on this review because there will never be a perfect phone that every single person finds flawless. I am looking forward to getting a Star – my friend has it and she loves it. Thanks for writing this review and thanks for leaving your… constructive if a little argumentative comments! Ciao for now!

  25. i have been a nokia owner for a long time now, and i decided to get the new 5530 and i am pretty satisfied with my purchase, but there’s a little problem. it restarts itself, i don’t know if there’s a problem with the O.S. (wich by the way, i keep up-to-date) or something else, does anyone else had had this problem ? if so, have you fixed it? and how?

  26. hey does the 5530 have the feature that samsung star has, where in when you’re in the image gallery, when you tilt the handphone itself the pictures slide to either side?

  27. You mean Accelerometer.5530 has this feature

  28. Khalid,
When I see that poor illiterates like you take so much time and effort into writing something, it gives me hope for the farmers and small townies in India.
Kudos and keep up the good work!

5530 is way better than star, but you guys shouldn’t be making up your mind based on the opinion of 1 person, check out other sites b4 dishing out money to buy either.

Personally, I’d wait for the new HTC

  29. to Oliver Twist and all trendies here..

bakal kaba o bakla?patweetums ka e.this blog is clearly pro nokia.who the cares about w/c phone is better.with all the suffering in the world today you all argue about phone specs?you are all lucky enough to have these gadgets whereas people die of hunger and flood.why not try the hammer test?lets see which phone is durable..wahahaha.trendsuckers.

  30. @ABC Before buying 5530 I compare it with Star n n n STAR SUCKS..!!!
    Why????
    1-Hardware finishing
    2-Price
    3-Options
    4-Simply…..Not “NOKIA”

  31. Thanks for the brief review. This is what I was primarily looking out for. Can you possibly also provide any more insights on the touch sensitivities between the 2 phones.

Your help is much appreciatedin this regard.

    Thanks again.

  32. i think samsung star gt5233w is best….coz dat having 3g….wifi…and much more…its cheap nd best…..i think best den 5530and 5800 xpress music….

  33. I got both, I have the Star first, and it sucked. Cant get it to play my movies, yes it has widgets but its nothing compared to many applications that the Symbian OS has. so by that, last week I bought the 5530. Its nothing compared to the Star. with the 5530 I can use my DJ headphones, lots of apps and games. I really love it. but, it could have been better if it had 3G like the 5800…

  34. hi friends where should i buy 5530 in delhi
it is not in th enokia priorty in delhi
    plz help me

  35. Get it from ebay for 12000 – http://cgi.ebay.in/SEALED-PACK-NOKIA-5530-XPRESSMUSIC-MOBILE-WITH-NATIONAL_W0QQitemZ250538405724QQcmdZViewItemQQptZIN_Mobile_Phones?hash=item3a5540af5c#ht_4357wt_973

  36. Totally agree with writers opinion. Have checked on several cellphone review sites, 5530 almost always outranks the star. Have checked with several cellphone dealers, same results. The star has little to no resale value, while there is always someone who wants a nokia, even a used one. Also agree with his opinion of smart phones, star has little to 0 3rd party apps while nokia has numerous (legitimate or otherwise). We’re talking about possibilities here which the 5530 has plenty of while the star has zip. By the way feel free to burn my comment, but that wont stop it from being true. :-p

  37. i have been using and switching through many mobile phone brands. and according to me, i find nokia worst where its price is concerned related to what product they make.. if anyone is being using Nokia since a long time back they might know that they have a symbian framework, and in each and every model they have the same. changing the shape of the phone and increasing the speed a little bit dosnt make a BIG change to user, as inside they have got all the same looks. starting from nokia 6600, there are i guess 100s of models which have the same inner look.
Here related to this blog i am using both 5530 and a samsung star, but i find star much better if you compare it with its price and the things they have provided in it. you have a full customization option to its font, wallpaper, widgets, etc.
other than this Nokia phones have this problem that if you have alot of things inside your phone it does not respond quickly, for eg. if too many msgs in your inbox, you phone becomes slower.
well where 5530 takes over star is where its compared to its motion sensor. star have a 4 way motion sensor, where as 5530 have a 360 degree motion sensor.
in screen size both have the 3inch touch screen. butt nokias 3 inch screen includes the call end and call recieve option inside it which reduces the screen size for the user. and here star again takes the lead.
star have a talk time of 10hrs, and yes it realy does i have tried it. where as 5530 have a lesser.
have u ever tried taking pictures from any nokia phones (with or without flash) at night?? i can guarantee and i know they suck at night, without a flash try taking picture from samsung star, and then u yourself will become a samsung fan.
the only thing missing is the audio jack. and that is all covered in the price difference.
and if you people does not consider the price then why dont u compare it with samsung pixon with 12mp camera.. i can even offer you to compare this samsung pixon with N97(it only have a 5mp camera)

  38. Excelent Blog!! it realli helped me.. Thanks

  39. If you want an unbiased opinion go to GSMArena.com and look at their review where they give an unbiased opinion of the 5530 over 9 pages and then compares it to its most obvious rivals the LG Cookie and Samsung Star while also comparing it to the Samsung Preston, LG Viewty and the older Nokia 5800.

Plus I’ve had both phones and the 5530 performs much better than the Star in many departments but thats just my opinion.

  40. I received an email from Nokia top official sometime before and he says there is further delay in release of Nokia 5530 in India and he does not say when exactly it will be released here.

Now it is confirmed that Nokia was conducting all their press meet only to create hype in the consumer mind and trying to fool them with their false announcements.

  41. a nice conclusion and a good blog..really helpful!!
